Search-engine advertising revenue has overtaken the sale of books in the United States, by some estimates, in a decade. The comparison is unfair and everybody keeps making it, which is itself the story: a number of people who could not have got the number in 1994 are now getting it.

MENLO PARK, October 5 -- Advertising revenue at the largest internet search company will exceed $3 billion for the year, according to documents filed this week, putting it ahead of the entire American book retail market.
The company also disclosed, in the same filing, that a significant number of its searches are for the same thing, and that it knows what that thing is, and will not say.
