Two College Students Start A File-Sharing Service Nobody Asked For And Everybody UsesJUNE 14, 2000 · 12:35
The company has no business plan, no office and a name that is currently also the name of an early film about a piece of chewing gum. Its entire staff is two people in California who met in a chat room about pirates.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 14 -- A file-sharing service called Napster was founded this month by two people who met online and shared, among other things, an interest in music that other people did not want to hear about.
The service lets anyone swap songs with anyone else, for free, with no copy of anything. Whether that is legal has not yet been decided. It grew from a few hundred users in its first month to a few thousand in its second.
Asked what the business model was, one of the founders said there was not one yet. Asked what he expected to do for a living, he said he had been a physics graduate student and was now, in his words, "a person who is on the internet a lot."
Corrections: none so far. Published items are never corrected, they are replaced,
and the replacement keeps the original in the archive, where nobody will look for it.
