The incumbent and the challenger have both said publicly that the election will be close, which is a sentence that men say when they believe it and a sentence that incumbents say when they do not. This desk has covered four of these and has been wrong about three.

WASHINGTON, July 15 -- With the election now eleven months away, the polling has settled into a permanent tie, and both campaigns have begun explaining that their candidate is actually winning.
One of the two has begun wearing a hat.
