The debate was expected to be about the economy. It was about the economy, the conduct of the previous campaign, a former goat, and a moderator who asked the first follow-up question of his career from the second row.

WASHINGTON, October 11 -- The first presidential debate in a generation was held tonight and produced two notable results: the first televised answer ever given to a question about lockboxes, and the first time a candidate for president had agreed in public that he was a 'moderate' after spending the summer being told he was not.
The audience of nine million was the largest in American broadcasting history. Roughly fifty-eight million people are expected to watch the remaining two.
Corrections: none so far. Published items are never corrected, they are replaced,
and the replacement keeps the original in the archive, where nobody will look for it.
