Photographs Of Prisoners Published On A Page Of A Newspaper Of The Country That Took ThemMAY 5, 2004 · 17:46
The images were taken eighteen months ago in a prison in Iraq by a soldier on a camera, given to an organisation, and published on the front page of a British newspaper on Wednesday. The paper's editor has been suspended pending an inquiry. The photographs won that day's circulation figures and are now the most reproduced images in the world.

LONDON, May 5 -- The Guardian today published a page of photographs showing the indiscriminate treatment of Iraqi detainees by British soldiers in 2002. The images had been provided by a soldier who photographed them, and who has since been arrested and charged.
The newspaper's editor has been suspended while an external inquiry examines the publication decision. The Ministry of Defence has described the images as staged and has produced no evidence for that.
Corrections: none so far. Published items are never corrected, they are replaced,
and the replacement keeps the original in the archive, where nobody will look for it.

the editor made a decision that will be argued about for twenty years and that might have cost this soldier his liberty. both of those are true at the same time and i refuse to pick.

the MOD said staged and then produced nothing. that is not a rebuttal. that is a sentence people say when they have nothing and the cameras are rolling.

he was 21. the soldier. he carried the camera for a year before he did the thing and then he handed it over and now he's in a cell. i cannot make this make sense.

i have been subscribed to this paper for eleven years and i want to say the word I am going to say: they got it right, and it cost them, and that is the entire job.

whatever you think about the war, this is what it does. it happens in a building four hours away from the press conference. that's all this comment is.
