Power Cut Takes Down Ohio And Ontario And Northeast For Nine DaysAUGUST 14, 2003 · 09:50

A SUBSTATION. EVERYONE AGREES THAT NOBODY CHECKED THE TREES IN THE SUMMER.
CLEVELAND, August 14 -- A power failure affecting ten million people in Ohio, Michigan, Ontario and Pennsylvania began at approximately 4:11pm local time on Thursday afternoon and was not fully resolved this week.
The initial cause — an untrimmed growth of trees contacting a line — has been confirmed, along with a second question, still open, about why a distant part of the grid did not pick up the load.
