A respiratory illness has killed at least five people and hospitalised hundreds, and by this week it has been confirmed in eleven countries. It has no name yet. It is being referred to by a number, which is how these things always start and how they rarely end.

TORONTO, March 15 -- Canadian health officials have confirmed eleven cases of an atypical pneumonia among staff at a hospital, four of them fatal, and the cluster is now understood to be part of a wider outbreak that began in southern China in November.
The World Health Organization has issued a global alert for the first time in its history using its new mechanism for exactly this circumstance.
