Bombings In Bali Kill Over Two Hundred, Most Of Them ForeignersOCTOBER 12, 2002 · 10:33
A series of bombs went off in a tourist district in Bali, killing at least 202 people, most of them foreign nationals, many of them Australian. The bombings were almost certainly the work of an organisation that had rejected peace in Indonesia two years earlier.

THE STREET. THE MEMORIAL WAS THERE WITHIN TWELVE HOURS AND WAS NEEDED WITHIN FOUR.
DENPASAR, Indonesia, October 12 -- Three bombs detonated within a few minutes of each other in a tourist district of Bali on Saturday night, killing at least 202 people and injuring around 200 more, most of them foreign nationals.
Almost all of the dead were tourists. Foreign governments have advised their citizens against travel to the region, which will do considerable damage to an economy already dependent on a single season.

my mother and father were on that street. they are alive. my mother's hand is broken and my father will not talk about it and I will not ask him to.

i keep thinking about the twenty-two australian dead and how the number 202 makes everybody else a rounding error in the papers. i have a friend in perth who lost two.

the government keeps saying 'tourists' on the news and keeps saying 'OUR citizens' when one of them dies. it is the same word and i would like it changed.

it's a beautiful place. that's the thing nobody says. it's a beautiful place and this happened in it and both of those are now permanent.
