No wars started. No cabinets fell. No animals escaped. This newspaper has nonetheless attempted to establish what people did in August, and can report that the answer is: they went on holiday, and they argued about it.

LONDON, August 20 -- August has been, by any measure this desk can construct, a month in which nothing happened, and we have therefore decided to spend the front page on the subject of holidays.
Bookings to Mediterranean destinations are reported to be down by around eight percent on last year, a fall that the industry attributes to the weather and to the introduction of a single carrier who has been undercutting everybody since April.
Corrections: none so far. Published items are never corrected, they are replaced,
and the replacement keeps the original in the archive, where nobody will look for it.
