Netherlands Becomes First Country To Legalise Same-Sex MarriageAPRIL 1, 2002 · 14:37

AMSTERDAM, April 1 -- The Netherlands today became the first country in the world to legalise marriage between two people of the same sex, a decision taken by 109 votes to 33.
The new law applies to couples who apply within a year of the wedding having taken place; retroactive marriages will not be recognised before April 2004.
