Letters Containing Powder Sent To Senators And NewsroomsOCTOBER 20, 2001 · 18:41
Twenty-two people have been diagnosed with cutaneous anthrax after opening letters sent to two senators and two news organisations. Investigators have said repeatedly that the public risk is low, and have also said repeatedly that they do not know how many letters are out there.
WASHINGTON, October 20 -- Investigators confirmed today that anthrax has been found in mail sent to at least four senators and two media organisations, and that 22 people have developed cutaneous infections, three of them postal workers.
"There is no danger to the general public," said an FBI spokesman on Wednesday, and on Thursday the same spokesman said that the department was "sensitive to any perception of an ongoing threat."
