Ground Forces Enter AfghanistanOCTOBER 7, 2001 · 17:34
Television shows the aircraft. The order of events does not, and it will be a long time before anyone agrees on it: this newspaper has been unable to confirm who is in the mountains, in what number, under whose command.
KABUL, October 7 -- Aircraft began striking targets in Afghanistan on Sunday night, and American and British troops entered the country overnight, according to officials in both countries.
There is no useful way to describe the size or shape of what has arrived. The government has said "thousands". A senior official in the region, speaking on condition of anonymity, said "some".
