LIMA, May 23 -- A powerful earthquake struck southern Peru on Wednesday afternoon, killing at least 130 people and injuring hundreds more across Peru and Ecuador. Shaking was felt in eleven countries, including, briefly, in California.
The worst damage is reported in the mountains, where landslides have buried villages and, according to a relief official speaking by satellite telephone, several roads.
