The date that was supposed to end everything has arrived on schedule, having waited, improbably, for midnight. The party in Sydney cost an estimated fifty million dollars. Approximately six thousand people who came for that have gone straight home to bed.

MIDNIGHT. THE HARBOUR WAS FULL AND THE BRIDGE WAS FULL AND NOBODY HAD ANY IDEA WHERE TO GO.

SYDNEY, January 1 -- The third millennium of the common era began at midnight last night in the form in which the calendar has been counting for two thousand years, which is to say 2001, which several thousand people did not believe until the fireworks started.

The preparations were enormous, the weather was warm, and a satellite carrying a message from the Prime Minister was launched into orbit and read out, somewhat late, by three stations.

The party was paid off in August of the previous year, on time, in full, with the aftermath of the Olympics discussed occasionally and not urgently. Sydney is now on record as the first city to be paid for a party in its own time zone.

Corrections: none so far. Published items are never corrected, they are replaced, and the replacement keeps the original in the archive, where nobody will look for it.
