Commonwealth Games Open In Manchester With A Barge That Has To Be Wheeled Into PlaceJULY 14, 2002 · 08:19
The opening ceremony moved 2,000 competitors up the River Irwell on a barge which, three days before, was still being assembled in a warehouse approximately eleven miles away. This is standard practice in the host city and is not normally considered remarkable.

THE BARGE.

MANCHESTER, July 14 -- The Commonwealth Games opened this evening with a ceremony on the River Irwell in which 2,000 competitors were carried past the city on a barge that had to be floated up the canal under its own power three days ago, having been built in a warehouse.

Nineteen nations and four territories are competing. Fiji, at this competition, won more golds per head of population than any other country on earth.

Corrections: none so far. Published items are never corrected, they are replaced, and the replacement keeps the original in the archive, where nobody will look for it.
