Winter Olympics Open In Salt Lake City With A Debt And A PrayerFEBRUARY 8, 2002 · 12:23
The Games were awarded to a city that did not have the venues, which built them in eighteen months, and the athletes' village, which was not finished. Both facts are likely to appear in the first paragraph of every retrospective written about this sport.

THE CEREMONY. THE FIRE WENT OUT TWICE, WHICH EVERYBODY NOTICED.
SALT LAKE CITY, February 8 -- The Winter Olympics opened this evening in a city that built its ski jump in eighteen months and hosted an athletics event in a field.
There are 2,500 athletes from 78 nations competing in 15 sports over 17 days. The United States and Germany have between them won more medals than the rest of the world put together, which is a sentence that will be repeated in every language in this building.
