World Cup Opens In Japan And South Korea With 32 Teams From Six ContinentsMAY 31, 2002 · 17:58
It is the first tournament to be staged in two countries and the first in which the hosts have to travel like everybody else. It will also be remembered for a striker who arrived having played 23 minutes of professional football before the tournament.

THE STADIUM. IT IS CLEAN. SOME OF THEM ARE CLEAN.
TOKYO, May 31 -- The World Cup opened this evening with a match between the hosts, in a stadium built with a public subsidy that the government has since published, and one team that is two countries.
Thirty-two teams from six confederations are playing 64 matches over 31 days. The final is on 30 June.
Corrections: none so far. Published items are never corrected, they are replaced,
and the replacement keeps the original in the archive, where nobody will look for it.
