Twelve Countries Begin Using A Currency Nobody Has To LearnJANUARY 1, 2002 · 10:09
Notes and coins in twelve currencies were issued to 300 million people on the first of the month. Accounts are still being opened in old currencies in three countries. The conversion rate was fixed years ago and will not be adjusted for as long as the exchange rate holds, which is a sentence with conditions in it.

THE NOTES. THE BRIDGE IS IN ROUEN AND WE HAVE CHECKED.
FRANKFURT, January 1 -- The euro entered circulation in twelve countries this morning, replacing national currencies with a note that shows a window and a bridge, neither of which is in the country that issued it.
The European Central Bank has assured citizens that the changeover will be 'an entirely ordinary experience,' a phrase which has been repeated approximately eleven thousand times since January 1999 and which everybody still finds slightly sinister.
Corrections: none so far. Published items are never corrected, they are replaced,
and the replacement keeps the original in the archive, where nobody will look for it.
