THE COMMENT RULES
There are two of them and one of them is a joke. This page exists because the
real newspapers' comment rules are 4,000 words long and were written by lawyers in 1999, and
because a section that is mostly comments should at least be honest about its own rules.
1. “Be the kind of person who would be tolerable in person.”
2. “Do not correct people's grammar unless it is fun.”
and one actual technical rule: no fonts larger than 11
pixels. That is genuine. There was a 2003 incident and we do not discuss it.
WHAT HAPPENS TO A COMMENT
| OUTCOME | HOW MANY | WHY |
| published | 7 to 9 | the ones that were interesting |
| marked OFF-TOPIC | some | about the font, or about the poster's politics |
| marked MODERATOR | some | they are the ones deleting the rest |
| deleted | the rest | not our decision. the number of comments is not our decision either |
THE COMMENTS ON THIS SITE ARE YOURS
Every comment box on this site writes to your own browser
and to nowhere else. Nobody reads them. There is no server, no account, and no way for the
comment you post at 2am to reach the article it is about, because it is stored on your hard
drive next to a cookie nobody wants.
This is either the most honest comment section ever
built or the saddest one, depending on the day, and we genuinely do not know which.
