Columbia left the pad on its third attempt of the week carrying a new external tank, a new crew escape system and approximately two and a half billion dollars of changes made since the last flight. Nobody in the press corps has said the word 'gremlin' out loud since Thursday.

THE PAD, ELEVEN DAYS AGO.
CAPE CANAVERAL, January 16 -- The space shuttle Columbia launched this afternoon at 2:04pm EST on the third attempt of the week, carrying seven astronauts and 16 days of experiments to the international space station.
The vehicle has been redesigned since the last flight, including the tank, the main engines, the landing gear and a hatch that has been moved from the side of the crew module to the roof specifically so that an astronaut can open it while wearing a pressure suit.
The shuttle is scheduled to return on February 1.
