The Boy With The Glasses Is Released, And A Generation Loses Its NerveNOVEMBER 16, 2001 · 07:48
Eleven years of newspaper speculation ended tonight with the release of the first Harry Potter film, three years after the first book and four before the last of the series was written. Children who were seven when they queued for it are now eighteen and have queued again.

THE PREMIERE. THE CHILDREN ARE BLURRED. THE PARENTS ARE BLURRED. EVERYBODY IS BLURRED.

LONDON, November 16 -- The first Harry Potter film opened in cinemas this evening, nearly four years after the first novel was published and at the end of a queue of children who had been assembling outside cinemas since the afternoon, dressed as their characters, for a film they had not been permitted to see for eleven years of their lives.

The adaptation is reported to be faithful, which in this context is a strange compliment. It runs 152 minutes, which in this context is a scandal.

Corrections: none so far. Published items are never corrected, they are replaced, and the replacement keeps the original in the archive, where nobody will look for it.

my granddaughter made me a page for my birthday. it had a background. it was the most beautiful thing anyone has ever given me and it was a background.

when the news was read out loud by somebody, on the radio, with a pause in the middle. do you remember the pause. nobody remembers the pause.
